PORT ORANGE, Fla. – He’s known as the “Singing Truck Driver” on YouTube, and the Port Orange man has more than 50,000 hits for his song “Detention,” which samples Otis Redding’s “Sitting on the Dock of the Bay.”

Brad James tells Local 6 this all started out of boredom. He sings into his iPhone and uploads the songs to YouTube.  So far he’s covered about 100 songs, from artists like Garth Brooks and Johnny Cash.

“One person tells another person and  it has a domino effect then the next thing you know you’ve got 18,000 people on stand by to hear your next song,” James said.

James video chatted with us from his famous truck Monday. He says his YouTube channel has nearly 300-thousand views.

“It surprises me every day,” he said.

You can visit his website to fill out a request form. James is also raising money to independently produce an album, with the hopes of getting picked up by a record label.

“You basically have to show them what you’ve got first and what type of product you can offer them before they’ll even look at you,” he said.

He says the album will be mostly covers, and of course, include “Detention,” which he said has quickly become a trucker’s anthem.

And the biggest perk of a career in music versus life on the road?

“I would be able to spend more time with my family, that’s what I miss the most.”
