The Marion Soil & Water Conservation District on Thursday released a list of winners for a mural contest aimed at educating students about natural resources and soil.
The contest’s theme was “DIG DEEPER — Mysteries in the Soil.”
The K-5 contest was split into three grade divisions. The winning classroom in each division earned $100 worth of classroom supplies. Each student artist of a winning mural also received a gift.
Members of the public voted to choose the winner of the contest. Here’s a list of the first place winners:
Beginning Division (K-1st grade): Sandra Buchheit’s class at Pratum Elementary School in Salem.
Intermediate Division (2nd-3rd grade): Ryan Ellis’ class at Forest Ridge Elementary School in Salem.
Advanced Division (4th-5th grade): Kristine Freeman’s class at Central Howell Elementary School in Silverton.
To enter the contest, the class had to be within the Marion Soil and Water Conservation District, which includes cities such as Salem, Keizer, Silverton and most of Woodburn.
