Need a reason for a road trip this spring? Beech Mountain in western North Carolina is launching its first Family Fun Month in June.

For the entire month, Beech Mountain, known for its skiing and sledding in the winter, will offer organized activities, family initiatives and lodging specials. Activities include everything from guided hikes, photography workshops, Land of Oz tours and parent-child golf outings to mountain biking, running races, concerts on the lawn and outdoor movies. Beech Mountain is eastern America’s highest town.

I would love to check out the Land of Oz, a former amusement park based on “The Wizard of Oz” complete with a yellow brick road.

The Beech Mountain Tourism Development Authority has put together a website with a daily schedule of events and a Family Fun Month Participation card.

Two special lodging packages are offered. One package adds a free third night to any two-night stay. A second provides 25 percent off a stay of at least five nights. Many of the activities are free or have a nominal charge.

On Fridays through Sundays, Beech Mountain Resort operates its downhill mountain biking park with lift access for both riders and their bikes. The resort also offers disc golf and chairlift rides to the summit where there is a pub and observation deck.

Beech Mountain is about four hours from Raleigh.
