Briefs: McConnell on US men’s water polo team roster

Former Laguna Beach High athlete Nolan McConnell has been named to the USA Water Polo Men’s Senior National Team for the FINA Men’s Intercontinental Qualification Tournament which starts Monday and runs through May 31 in Shanghai, China. The tournament serves as a qualifier for the FINA World League Super Final in June in Dubai.

 

McConnell, an attacker who now plays at Long Beach State, is one of 13 players named to the qualification tournament roster. Team USA will open group play with matches against China, South Africa and Brazil. The team is led by Head Coach Dejan Udovicic and Assistant Coach Jack Kocur.

 

Team USA also will take part in a four-game series with Serbia June 4-8 at four locations in northern California.

 

Team USA Women’s Senior National Team Head Coach Adam Krikorian has announced his roster for the eight-team FINA Women’s Intercontinental Tournament which got underway Tuesday at the Riverside Aquatics Complex. One of 13 athletes named to the team is Laguna Beach High junior Makenzie Fischer, the 2014 Player of the Year in CIF Southern Section Division.

 

 

 

Physicals offered

 

South Coast Medical Group will offer sports physicals to incoming Laguna Beach High athletes for the 2014-15 school year from 3 to 4:30 p.m. June 3 and June 4 at the school.

 

Students who plan on participating in Laguna Beach High athletics are required by the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) to have a sports physical with clearance.

 

The cost per physical is $40, with $25 of that fee going to the Laguna Beach High School Athletic Boosters.

 

 

Cardiac screenings

 

Heartfelt Cardiac Projects is teaming up with Laguna Beach High School Athletic Boosters to offer cardiac screenings June 3-4 for Laguna Beach High students and their families.

 

Screenings will be available between 3 and 6 p.m. both days at the school’s north gym and are offered for a donation of $85 per person (ages five and older).

Laguna Open coming

 

The 59th annual Men’s Laguna Open, sponsored by The Deck on Laguna Beach, Pacific Edge Hotel, Driftwood Restaurant, Bud Light and Wilson and in partnership with the California Beach Volleyball Assn. and City of Laguna Beach, is June 7-8 at Main Beach.

 

The two-day, double-elimination tournament will include a maximum of 28 teams playing on six courts. The top 24 ranked teams to sign up before the 4 p.m. June 5 deadline, are guaranteed entry. The remaining four tournament spots are saved for the top-ranked local Laguna Beach teams that sign up. The prize purse is $4,000.

 

Additionally, the Girls’ 16-Under Laguna Open Volleyball Tournament will be held July 10, and the Girls’ 14-U Laguna Open will run July 11, also at Main Beach.
