In Class 3A, Clear Lake’s Emily Snelling took second place with a score of 151 (78-73) at Ames Golf and Country Club, which was three strokes behind champion Paige VanDyk of South Tama.

Snelling, a freshman, came into Tuesday’s round in third place and a round of 73, in which she carded four birdies, helped vault her into second place.

“I feel pretty good about second,” Snelling said.

Clear Lake coach Adam Brinkman said Snelling was on her game both days.

“The first day she was hitting the ball pretty well but her putting a was little off,” Brinkman said. “These greens are tricky to read, they’re undulating and pretty quick.

“It was her irons (Tuesday) that were key. She was putting them close to the pin and was making puts.”

The placing helped Clear Lake to third place in the team race with a score of 723. Atlantic claimed the team title with 695.

Clear Lake’s Paige Backhaus turned in a 10th-place finish with a two-day total of 169 (86-83).

“Paige had a great week,” Brinkman said.

Erin Gates (200) and Maddie Hess (203) rounded out the Lions’ scoring to help them to their second-straight third-place finish – the Lions were third in Class 4A last year.

“Coming into this season, I didn’t know what to expect,” Brinkman said. “The girls worked hard all season and they deserve it.”

Added Snelling, “I think we have a pretty strong chance of coming back next year, but it’s tough to lose three seniors.”

In Class 2A, Nashua-Plainfield’s Sarah McMichael added another milestone to her impressive prep golf career on Tuesday.

McMichael won her second-straight Class 2A individual state golf title at American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown.

The junior carded a 152 (75-77) to win by two strokes over Dike-New Hartford’s Ashley Dumler and was three strokes clear of Dike-New Hartford’s Briana Weber.

McMichael entered Tuesday in a tie for first with Dumler. The two hung tight for the entire 18 holes as McMichael entered the final hole with a one-stroke lead.

The first-place finish by McMichael helped the Huskies to fourth place as a team with a score of 747. Dike-New Hartford won the team title at 690.

Nashua-Plainfield’s Kalya Dietz finished in a tie for 21st with a two-day total of 190 (94-96), Jamie Baldwin added a 199 and Kelsey Poppe finished with a 206 to round out the huskies’ scoring.

Charles City followed up a state championship a year ago with a second-place finish  in Class 4A on Tuesday at Ames Golf and Country Club.

The Comets’ Megan Joerger led the way, finishing fourth individually with a score of 167 (82-85).

Charles City also received scoring rounds from Addie Crawford with a 185 (97-88), Sydney Etherington with a 195 (96-99) and Jamie Sindlinger with a 208 (110-98).

Xavier won the team title with 691 and Xavier’s Maddie Bertsch won the individual title with a 149.

Bishop Garrigan’s Alexa Capesius was runner-up medalist in Class 1A with a score of 157 (76-81) and the Golden Bears claimed fourth place in the team race with 757.

In addition to Capesius’ 157, Brittney Arndorfer shot 181 (91-90), Emily Marlow carded 187 (93-94) and Chloe Garman shot 232 (111-121).
