What to think about Justin Hunter?

While Justin Hunter has quietly become the Titans number one receiver (in terms of position not quality) , there is a lot to love about Hunter.

At 6’4″ with dynamic speed and leaping ability, Hunter is exactly what you would draw up if you were looking to build an “X” receiver. Now that he has added extra thickness (which should lead to less risk of injury) it appears as though the Titans made a smart trade going up in the 2013 NFL Draft to grab Hunter. He has also shown in his short time in the NFL that he has mostly fixed his drops problem, and that he can be trusted as an every down receiver.

For all of those positives there are still some out there who aren’t quite sold on the Tennessee prospect.

In this article Jon Moore says

“Looking at our end of season WR efficiency numbers, Hunter was the 12th most efficient fantasy receiver on a per target basis (min 15 targets).  That’s pretty tasty.  He also posted two games of at least 100 yards and a TD, which was the same as TY Hilton,  Anquan Boldin and Victor Cruz, so there are some reasons to be excited.  Yet, as you may detect in my tone, I’m still not crazy about him and here’s why.”

He goes on to list other physical phenoms that failed, like Darrius Heyward-Bey and Tandon Doss. All of which had successful rookie years, but couldn’t make the transition to full time starter. It is important to remember that the Titans receiving needs might be more severe than we think.

While Shawn Jefferson has proven that he is a good coach and that he can be trusted to get all of the Titans receivers to play at a high level, don’t be surprised to see the Titans add another player soon.

Now, having said all this I think the article above is mostly speculative and there is a lot to like about Hunter’s development with a brilliant offensive mind at the helm.
