Silver Linings: Limber up and have some fun at Play Day
Google “Johanna Quaas YouTube” and prepare to be inspired by the 86-year-old gymnast’s strength, grace and agility.
Actually, I was depressed. At the peak of my physical prowess I never dreamt of such feats. Although I’ve given up standing on my head and can’t remember the last time I did a somersault, I didn’t think I was in a precipitous decline — until Johanna. She’s got a few years on me, so maybe by the time I’m 86 I’ll be that good.
I have bad news and good news. The bad news is you’ll never be as good as Johanna. The good news is you’ll get a chance to try! On June 23 adults over 50 are invited to a seniors Play Day at the Whistler Gymnastics Centre in Cheakamus Crossing hosted by Oros Whistler Gymnastics Club, Mature Action Community and Whistler Community Services Society.
From 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., you’ll get an opportunity to try out the equipment, play some games and have a few laughs. Tami Mitchell, head coach of the Whistler Gymnastics Club explains the rationale for this initiative. “This space was given to us under the Whistler 2010 Sports Legacies. We want to make sure it’s being used by the entire community.”
That’s where we come in. Right now there are no older adults bouncing, leaping, or tumbling in the Gymnastics Centre. Tami would like to change that. Having received a grant through Viasport BC, she has the funding in place to host the kick-off Play Day, and a follow-up series of classes.
Tami explained that gymnastics is gaining popularity as a means to greater health and fitness for seniors. “It’s good for balance, flexibility and coordination. It can really reduce the incidence of falls in older adults by improving and maintaining balance. It’s great way to get an overall fitness workout.”
So it’s not about aspiring to the Olympics or becoming a Johanna Quaas — it’s about staying in shape and being strong and agile enough to do the things you love to do. When you look at it that way, how can you resist?
So now you want to know more about the Play Day, but you’re a bit anxious. Your leotard-wearing days are behind you, or your joints are creaky, or you’ve never been able to do a handstand — even when you were 16. No problem!
Dress for comfort in anything — sweats, shorts, tights and a T-shirt. Wear rubber soles or bare feet. Participants will be introduced to the equipment and exercises through games and activities in a safe, positive and fun environment.
And if you’re a guy — you’re welcome too. Real men eat quiche and do gymnastics. The event will be lead by Sheila Moses, a 40-year veteran of gymnastics coaching. She’s a bit older — one of us. That’s comforting.
Having whetted our appetites with Play Day, Tami plans to follow up with a series of weekly summer classes for the over-50 crowd. Because of the grant, these classes will be at minimal cost. Play Day is FREE! And there will be refreshments afterwards. So come out June 23 for fun, frolicking and fitness!
