56-unit apartment complex planned for Greenlawn Drive in Beaufort
A North Carolina developer plans to build 56 apartments on Greenlawn Drive, behind the Bi-Lo in Beaufort Town Center, with the help of a federal tax credit for affordable housing.
Ashley Pointe Apartments would consist of five buildings and a community clubhouse on 5 acres, according to plans submitted to the city by Greenway Residential Development LLC. Two-bedroom units at Ashley Pointe will rent for $495 a month, and three-bedroom apartments will rent for $545, according to a description of the project.
Greenway has 11 similar complexes of more than 650 residences either completed or in development in South Carolina and North Carolina, according to its website.
Greenway was formed in 2009 “to fulfill its founder’s vision of developing, constructing and operating affordable and market rate housing communities,” according to the website.
In 2013, Greenway was awarded a federal tax credit of more than $747,000, part of a program to finance rental housing for low-income families, according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Attempts Monday to reach a company spokesman for comment were unsuccessful, but an employee who answered the phone number listed on the application to the city said more information should be available in about a month.
City project development planner Lauren Kelly said staff is finishing a final review of the project, and she expects the developer to apply for building permits soon. She said work could start within two months.
The complex will include 40 two-bedroom apartments and 16 three-bedroom apartments. The buildings will have mostly brick facades, and the complex will include a playground and gazebo with seating, according to a description submitted to the city. The clubhouse will have an exercise room, laundry room, computer room and multipurpose area.
The property is bounded by Bi-Lo to the south, marsh to the west, single-family homes to the east and the Marsh Pointe affordable-housing complex to the north. Marsh Pointe is operated by the Beaufort Housing Authority.
Developer 303 Associates had owned the property and had considered building a meeting center. The land was sold to Ashley Pointe Apartments early this year, according to Beaufort County property records.
