Centaurs drop home opener; Sirens win by default
The Grande Prairie Centaurs Division III and Division II rugby teams were unable to post wins on Saturday.
In front of a large, supportive home crowd, the Division III Centaurs fell 27-17 to the Strathcona Druids in the first game of the day at Macklin Field, moving to a 1-1 season record.
“We were dropping the ball – it was the simple stuff that we weren’t able to execute and the coverage on our defence,” said Gus Fai, head coach of the Centaurs, summing up the team’s loss.
Later in the day, the Division II Centaurs were defeated 39-22 by the Fort McMurray Knights, and are now 0-2 this season.
Despite the loss, Fai says he saw some positives.
“There was a little bit more communication with our players and a few more guys backing each other up – we just weren’t executing from start to finish,” he said.
The Centaurs’ next game is against the Edmonton Clan on June 14 . Their next home game is on July 5 against the LA Crude.
Heading forward, Fai says the Centaurs teams need to get back to basics.
“We have to get our guys to do the simple things properly and not try and get to fancy with the simple stuff like passing and executing.”
Easy win for Sirens
It was an easy victory for the Grande Prairie Sirens on Saturday.
The female rugby squad was slated to play the Strathcona Druids in a regular season Edmonton Rugby Union Division 2 game, but the Druids were not able to field enough players and had to forfeit as a result.
But, that didn’t stop female rugby being played.
In a show of sportsmanship, the Sirens loaned players to the Druids for a fun game of rugby.
The win moves the Sirens’ record to 2-3, with their next game on June 14 against the Edmonton Pirates.
