Football home-field advantage, cheerleading big topics at UIL legislative council meetings
Winning a Class 6A district championship on the football field in 2015 could come with home-field advantage, as the University Interscholastic League legislative council’s athletic committee passed the proposal Tuesday.
The proposal now needs a vote from the full legislative council, which continues its two-day meetings Wednesday to vote on proposals and discuss other items. Among those may include the future of the state basketball tournaments, which may be forced out of Austin with the South by Southwest Music Conference and Festival continuing to grow.
Another is the possible addition of Game Day Cheer as a UIL-sanctioned activity.
One of Tuesday’s most contest topics, the council’s policy committee voted 4-3 in favor of a pilot program – Cy-Fair ISD superintendent Mark Henry broke the tie to pass the proposal according to a Dallas Morning News report. It still needs to pass through the entire legislative council Wednesday.
The Commissioner of Education must approve amendments passed by the Legislative Council before they may take effect.
Bowling didn’t make it out of the policy committee, while a survey will go out to the state’s superintendent to gauge the interest for water polo.
When surveyed on home-field advantage, the 5A superintendents – many will become 6A next year – were in favor for the first round. Currently, coaches from the two respective schools agree to a site or can flip if there’s disagreement.
Also passing through committee included adding a fourth playoff team in Class 2A beginning in 2015. Cross country will add a fourth team from each region for the state meet.
One rejected proposal called for a mercy rule in 11-man football. There is a mercy rule in 6-man – the game ends when one team gets ahead by 45 points by halftime or later.
During the 2013 season, a parent of a Fort Worth Western Hills football player filed a bullying complaint after Aledo beat Western Hills 91-0. Aledo, which later determined bullying did not occur, went on to win a state championship and set the national scoring record.
