Where the Girls Go/ATX: Friday the 13th Edition: The weekend’s best bets for avoiding bad luck …

Go to Source

Beware of black cats, broken mirrors, rumbling two-wheelers, and crazed soccer fans this weekend. Friday the 13th is just cause for silly superstition, considering Thursday’s full moon. Maybe that’s why this weekend is ripe with atypical events, parties, and soccer.

Unfortunately, we’re rotating through the men’s World Cup so there will be no Megan Rapinoe or Abby Wambach action until next year. Still, those boys are great ball-kickers. Regardless of your soccer preferences, get ready for a hot and sticky, queertastic weekend. Superstition be damned.

Friday: Fill up on art and history tonight at the opening reception for local visual artist Consetta Rubel. The exhibit, “Works on Paper,” took it’s name from her portraits done on paper bags, reminding us all about the Paper Bag Test. Adzua-Gette of House of Shakur will lead the “sound curation.” And there will be food. It’s sure to kick off the weekend right.

Suggestion: Go and support good local art.

Saturday: Today is so jam-packed I’ve decided to forgo a mellow Sunday recommendation and instead focus it all right here.

A) ROLLER DERBY is back. With multiple games happening today. The Texas Roller Girls are going up against Denver at the Austin Convention Center at 5pm. And just a jump across the lake Texas Roller Derby‘s hardcore ladies on skates take over Palmer Events center for back to back bouts today: Cherry Bombs versus the Holy Rollers.

B) After derby, send off the one and only Christeeene before she bounces across the ocean to terrify and enthrall Europe. CUC even employed its beloved name change for the night, so when you get to Red River remember Queer Up Charlie’s with DJs Mouthfeel and Dylan Reece, and every other ATX hipster-queer.

C) Or party with a poet, at Morgan Collado‘s book release party. Once again this weekend, House of Shakur is in charge of music, and special guests include Amalthea Clemons, Toi Scott, and Femmerocious Love.

Suggestion: Pack a lunch. It’s gonna be a long day’s night.

Okay, lovahs, we’re back here next week, and don’t forget to come dance with Where the Girls Go this coming Thursday for queer prom.
