Rugby – Toner in optimistic mood

The 27-year old will earn his 17th cap at Estadio Jose Fierro as Ireland bid to back up last weekend’s 29-17 triumph with another victory.

Toner believes they will face big task against the Pumas in Tucuman, a renowned rugby area, but is optimistic they can win.

“I think you are going to expect much of the same in the contact area and the tackle zone there, they’re very ferocious going into the breakdown and going into the tackles,” he said.

“We’re going to have to be mindful of that, just securing our breakdown to be honest. But I think the more they play together, the more cohesive they are going to be.

“I think they would have worked a lot on their set-piece this week because I think we sort of disrupted them last week so they’re probably going to better in that aspect of the game.”

This will be the final game of what has been a super campaign for Toner with Leinster and Ireland.

“It has been a very good season for me and for Ireland so far so it would be a great way to finish off with a good win,” he added.

“I think they kind of tore into us a bit in the breakdown and obviously trying to get through that gain-line. They were pretty ferocious at the tackle area so I think our running-lines off nine and off ten, we can try and get over the gain-line a bit more.”
