Britain’s swimmers impressed on day one of the Barcelona leg of the Mare Nostrum series by securing 15 medals in total – six of them gold.
The performance of the day went to Adam Peaty (City of Derby) who set a new British Record on the way to winning gold in the Men’s 100m Breaststroke. Peaty, who set the 50m Breaststroke standard earlier this week, touched in 59.25 to better the previous 100m mark of 59.55 set by Dan Sliwinski in 2009.
Peaty showed strength and confidence to overcome a strong field and did so by some margin. Silver went to Japan’s Yasuhiro Koseki in 1:00.15 and Andrei Nikolaev of Russia took the bronze in 1:00.69. Scottish pair Ross Murdoch and Michael Jamieson finished fourth and fifth in 1:01.09 and 1:01.20 respectively.
James Guy (Millfield) continues to impress and won gold in the Men’s 400m Freestyle with a time of 3:48.11. Silver went to Devon Myles Brown (South Africa) in 3:49.83 and Spain’s Miguel Duran Navia took bronze in 3:50.61.
Fran Halsall (British Gas NTC, Loughborough) swam one of her fastest times of the season to win gold in the Women’s 50m Freestyle. She touched home in 24.40 ahead of Danish pair Jeanette Ottesen in 24.54 and Pernille Blume in 24.90.
Jazz Carlin continued her impressive season with another gold medal in the Mare Nostrum Series this time in the Women’s 1500m Freestyle. The Swansea University swimmer touched in a Championship Record 16:07.41 for the gold ahead of Maria Vilas Vidal in 16:25.68 and Spanish team mate Melanie Costa Schmid in 16:34.97.
Ben Proud (Plymouth Leander) took the Men’s 50m Butterfly title in 23.60 ahead of Rafael Munoz Perez of Spain in 23.69 and Hirofumi Ikebata of Japan in 23.90.
Hannah Miley (Garioch) won the battle of the Brits in the Women’s 400m Individual Medley when she swam a season’s best 4:33.25 to take the gold from Aimee Willmott (Middlesborough) with the silver in 4:34.87. Bronze went to Sakiko Shimizu of Japan in 4:38.99.
There was a tight contest in the Women’s 100m Backstroke final which eventually saw Mie Nielsen (Denmark) take the gold in 59.69 from Wales’ Georgia Davies with the silver in 1:00.16 and Lizzie Simmonds (British Gas NTC, Loughborough) the bronze in 1:00.54
Welsh swimmer Jemma Lowe won a silver medal in the Women’s 100m Butterfly with a time of 58.61. Ottesen of Denmark took the gold in a Championship Record 57.20 and bronze went to Russia’s Svetlana Chimrova in 58.72.
Two of Britain’s swimmers also reached the podium in the Men’s 200m Individual Medley. Gold went to Japan’s Hiromasa Fujimori in 1:59.30, Joe Roebuck (British Gas NTC, Bath) took the silver in 2:00.84 and Roberto Pavoni (British gas NTC, Loughborough) took the bronze in 2:01.45.
Chris Walker-Hebborn (British Gas NTC, Bath) took the bronze in the Men’s 50m Backstroke in 25.33. Gold went to Junya Koga of Japan in 24.66 while silver went to Ryosuke Irie (Japan) in 25.16.
Bath-based swimmer Siobhan-Marie O’Connor put in a strong performance in the Women’s 200m Freestyle to take the bronze medal in 1:57.86. Gold went to Veronika Popova of Russia in 1:56.20 and Karin Prinsloo of South Africa took the silver in 1:57.36.
Edinburgh’s Corrie Scott swam 32.03 to take the bronze in the Women’s 50m Breaststroke. Gold went to Ukraine’s Maria Liver in 31.23 and Spain’s Jessica Vall Montero took the silver in 31.90.
