Kickball league grows in the Valley

Youngstown, OH (WKBN)- Over the past seven years, hundreds of Valley adults have embraced one of their favorite childhood pastimes: kickball. Youngstown is one of three divisions apart of the Kickball League of Ohio.

“We have 20 teams here in Youngstown, Canton has 21 and Akron has 13 this season,” said Michelle Pascale, director of the league.

Pascale has directed the Kickball League of Ohio since its inception in 2007, and she did so with an equal playing field in mind.

“You don’t have to be real athletic,” she said. “I think it’s something that husbands can play with their wives. It’s nice that way, that women aren’t sitting on the sidelines, they can actually participate.”

Whether you’re playing, watching, or even umpiring…there’s one main goal: fun.

“Just watching people have a good time, and having a good time with them,” said Sam Scott, a kickball umpire. “It’s very informal so it makes it very easy to come out, and I don’t have to worry about blowing a call.”

As for the players, some are more serious than others, but ultimately it’s about developing relationships, and finding a release…through kickball.

“We take this life so seriously, and we always have to be mature with things,” said kickball player Shea Ulery. “Coming out here to kickball, we let loose and we get to be immature, and it’s really like gym class. We just get to have a bunch of fun.”

There are two seasons, spring and fall, with the next one starting towards the end of August. For more information on how you can get involved, visit www.kickballohio.com.
