Trending: Multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriters, Bloom Twins
No, you’re not seeing double – Ukrainian sister act Bloom Twins are making twice the impact on the music and fashion scenes
If we could collaborate with anyone it would be Radiohead,’ says Sonya Suprienko (far right), one half of 18-year-old singing duo Bloom Twins, which tells you all you need to know about their brand of dark pop (their cover of Pharrell’s ‘Happy’ is anything but).
Sonya and her sister Anna are Russian-speaking Ukrainians from a small town outside Kiev, who moved to London two years ago to pursue their musical ambitions. Their ethereal vocals have been likened to Lana Del Rey and The xx.
Like their parents (mum Viktoria is a vocal coach and plays in a band with their businessman father Slava), they are multi-instrumentalists with something to say. Their mother performed in Kiev’s Independence Square last December, when a million Ukrainians protested against the then President Viktor Yanukovych’s failure to secure a deal with the EU, moving the country away from Europe and closer to Russia. The girls added their voices by covering Bob Marley’s ‘Get Up, Stand Up’ as an unofficial protest song to raise awareness around the globe, earning them a chance to perform as the credits rolled on Newsnight in April.
They were dressed by hot Brit designer Joshua Kane, who kitted them out for the video of their new single ‘Blue’ – they also front his autumn/winter 2014 campaign. He’s not the only fashion luvvie who adores them: they were shot for Italian Vogue by Ellen von Unwerth, who invited them to play at her 60th birthday bash earlier this year.
