Cape Town’s Cape Junior Ballet presents In The Spotlight as part of the youth month celebrations.

Six dynamic dance performances, featuring the company’s talented dancers aged between 11 and 17 in various classical works and a new contemporary piece form part of the youth celebrations later this month.

Publicist Alison Float yesterday said: “In The Spotlight promises to be an entertaining celebration of youth, energy and life.”

Well known South African choreographers Brigitte Reeve, Nicolette Loxton, Kirsten Isenberg, Lindy Raizenberg, Yarisha Singh and Robin Van Wyk have all created pieces that will be performed.

“Known to perform like seasoned professionals, they are frequently incorporated into the ranks of the Cape Town City Ballet for large productions such as the recent Swan Lake at the Artscape Opera House,” she said.

Audiences will see the talented Khanya Mandongana, who recently received the Alvin Ailey scholarship as a prize at the prestigious South African International Ballet Competition this February.

Float said: “Mandongana aims to train at the world famous Rambert Dance School in London from the end of 2014 and the proceeds of the performance on Thursday 25 June will go towards his expenses.”

Established by Capetonian ballet teacher Dianne Cheesman in 2005, the CJB has a vision to develop talented young dancers in Cape Town and currently consists of 45 aspiring dancers selected by a prestigious audition panel from ballet studios in and around the Western Cape.

Pupils dance in a variety of styles including classical and neo-classical ballet, modern dance, contemporary dance and pantsula.

Performances of In The Spotlight will take place at the Masque Theatre in Muizenberg from June 25.
