Local roundup: Joe Fogarasi tops in pole vault at New Englands
BRIDGEWATER, Mass. — Windham High School junior Joe Fogarasi captured his second straight New England Outdoor Track championship in the pole vault on Saturday at Bridgewater State University.
Fogarasi jumped 15 feet, 3 inches to capture first place. His distance was more than a foot better than last week’s State Open, where he won at 14 feet. Teammate Jonah Swett was ninth in 13-3.
Griswold’s David Jackson took second in the javelin (187-11) and Fitch’s Tyler Latham was third (182-10). Latham also finished second in the 300 hurdles (39.18 seconds), and Windham Tech’s Damon Vega was sixth (40.46). Vega also was fifth in the 110 hurdles (14.727), and Latham was eighth (15.29).
Fitch’s Brian Robinson was fifth in the discus (150-10), and Bacon’s Devin Laliberte was 17th (134-05).
Ledyard’s Joe Carter finished eighth in the 200 (22.32 seconds) and 16th in the long jump (20 feet, 2.5 inches). Waterford’s Julio Gil-Martinez (11th, 22.44) and Grasso Tech’s Zachary Rand (18th, 22.82) also competed in the 200. NFA’s Andris Vital was ninth in the 100 meters (11.27).
Devon Marcoux was 27th for Windham in the 400 (54.78).
For the girls, Ledyard’s Chenoa Sebastian set a school record and finished second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.61 seconds, which was .04 seconds off of first place. Waterford’s Savonnah Artis finished second in the triple jump at 37-5, and NFA’s Taylor Driggers was 19th (34-0.50).
Griswold’s Alyssa Brehler set a school record in the 1,600 meters and finished fourth overall with a time of 4:58.13.
Driggers was seventh in the long jump at 17-3, and also contributed on the 4×100 team with Lauren Knerr, Camille McKenzie and MiaLynne Park, which finished 13th in 50.45 seconds. The 4×400 team of Charlotte Van Sambeck, Nicole Coughlin, McKenzie and Park placed 11th in 4:02.51. Woodstock’s Sarah Swenson was 14th in the 400 in 59.42 seconds, and Fitch’s Sydnee Spruill was 13th in the high jump (5-0). East Lyme’s Jenna Schumacher was 13th in the javelin (111-0), and Ledyard’s Ari Fustini was 17th (106-11).
Bacon’s Sierra Cameron (16-0.75) and Woodstock’s Rachelle Tomlinson (15-11) finished 21st and 23rd, respectively, in the long jump. Woodstock’s Kara Heilemann was 21st in the discus (105-4).
GIRLS LACROSSE
(2) Stonington 13 (4) Granby 10
STRATFORD — Emily Cassata scored three of the final four goals of the game, and Stonington (21-1) won the Class S championship for the first time in program history.
Cassata and teammate Elizabeth Morrison each scored four goals as Stonington rebounded from an 8-7 halftime deficit. Valerie Muller and Emily Grey scored two goals apiece, and Jenny Sieczkiewicz added the final tally.
The Bears’ defense clamped down in the second half and didn’t allow Granby to score in the final 18:53.
Danielson 7-6 Montville 1-0
MONTVILLE — Ben Rumrill allowed three hits and two walks with six strikeouts over five innings in the nightcap to help Danielson (3-2) record the sweep.
In the opener, Kolby Reggione had two hits to back Corey Sipios (1-0), who allowed four hits, struck out three and didn’t walk anyone in a complete-game affair. Nick Clemons had an RBI double for Montville.
Niantic 3-7 New London 0-6
NEW LONDON — Billy Buscetto’s RBI double in the seventh inning tied the game for Niantic (3-0), and then Austin Toback drove in Buscetto with the go-ahead run in the nightcap of a doubleheader sweep.
Buscetto earned the win in relief, and Toback finished with four hits and four RBIs. Gabriel Diaz also had four hits for New London (2-3), Peter Aldrich had three hits and two RBIs, and Justin Marceau contributed two doubles and two RBIS.
In the opener, Will Butler hurled a two-hit shutout with seven strikeouts and two walks. Michael Morgan hit a two-run double in the first inning.
TriTown 6-2 Led-Paw 4-13
THOMPSON — Jordan Kowalski went 4-for-5 with four runs scored, and teammates Kavan Jakuba, Nate Storey (three runs) and Ryan Francis (three RBIs) each had three hits as Ledyard-Pawcatuck (1-4) earned a split.
In the opener, Sean Falvey went 3-for-3 with an RBI, Kyle Tyler added two hits and an RBI, and Ben Guimont drove in two runs to back the pitching of Josh Malboeuf to lead TriTown (1-2).

LEDYARD — Mike Bruce broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the sixth with a two-out double that scored Cale Gilbert from first to give Ledyard-Pawcatuck the win. Gilbert finished 3-for-3 in backing Dylan Wilkinson (1-0), who pitched a complete-game five hitter.
Jewett City 15 Norwich 4
JEWETT CITY — Zach Christensen went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and three RBIs, and teammates Connor Bright (two runs, three RBIs) and Andrew Hassell (run) each went 2-for-3 to pace Jewett City in its season-opening win.
Andrew Hassell (1-0) allowed four hits and two runs, zero earned, with six strikeouts over five innings.
Abner Lugo DelToro had a double for Norwich (0-1).
