After rallying for two wins this week,  the Southern Illinois Miners ran out of luck Thursday as they fell to the Frontier Greys 4-3 in 11 innings.

The Miners took a 3-2 lead in the sixth inning, but the Greys tied it in the eighth frame and forced the contest into extra innings. In the 11th frame, Frontier’s Zach Tanner singled home Logan Pierce with the winning run and the Greys snapped their nine-game losing streak.

Southern Illinois had two runners on base in their half of the 11th, but couldn’t drive them home.

Cameron Lamb got the win for the Greys, while David Kubiak took the loss for the Miners.

Southern Illinois got on the board first in the bottom of the opening frame. Frank Martinez reached base on a walk, and then Chris Burke and Phil Butler were both hit by pitches. With the bases loaded, Jared McDonald lifted a lazy fly ball to left that was dropped by the fielder and Martinez scored.

The Miners would increase their lead to 2-0 in the second. Ryan Cavan led off the inning with a long double and he would later score on a double by Tyler Booth.

Frontier would bounce back and tied the score in the top of the fourth. The Greys hit back-to-back singles and then scored their first run on a sacrifice fly. Frontier then tied the contest on a RBI single.

Southern Illinois got its bats going again in the sixth frame. McDonald and Steve Marino both hit singles and McDonald then scored on a base hit by Aaron Gates.

The Greys got that run back in the eighth when the Miners pitching staff had some control problems. Joe Rapp reached base on a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch by Britt Robertshaw. Rapp would later score on another wild pitch.

Southern Illinois couldn’t get anything going against Frontier reliever Cameron Lamb. Lamb shut the Miners down in his three innings of work and only gave up one hit.

The Miners will head out on the road Friday on a six-game road trip.

Southern Illinois will play three games this weekend against the Florence Freedom (Ky.), and then three games June 17-19 against the Gateway Grizzles in Sauget.
