Cueist Dhvaj Haria on a high

AHMEDABAD: He is just 20 but is experiencing a high these days. He is Ahmedabad’s cueist Dhvaj Haria. The young lad, who plays snooker and billiards well, added a feather in his cap when his bronze-medal effort made him the first Indian to win a medal in under-21 Asian Snooker Championship that was held in Chandigarh.

After being runners-up in his group, Dhvaj blanked Alireza Rezaei of Iran 4-0 in the pre-quarters. But India’s top junior cueist’s biggest moment came in the quarters when he beat Pakistan’s top-ranked player Majid Ali 5-4 to march into the semis.

Down 0-4, against Majid, Dhavj made an incredible comeback and turned the tides on the Pakistan player. “I am surprised to know that I am the first Indian to win a medal in this tournament since it began 15 years ago,” he said.

And that is not all. He is also part of the Indian team which will play at the Australian Open billiards meet. From snooker to billiards, the transition will be not easy but Haria is used to turn adversities into opportunities. Hope he reaches a high Down Under as well.
