Sunset’s Jonathan Zoucha was named The Oregonian’s boys swimmer of the year for 2013-14 by The Oregonian high school sports staff.

Zoucha posted wins in all four of his events at the Class 6A state championships, with dominant individual wins in the 200 freestyle (1:38.72) and the 100 butterfly (49.28), and team wins in the 400 freestyle relay and the 200 medley relay. Zoucha will swim next year at Louisville.

We caught up recently with Zoucha to ask him about his high school career, his accomplishments and life outside running. Here’s what he had to say:

What are your college plans?

Swim and study business at the University of Louisville.

What lessons have sports taught you?

Discipline. Putting other teammates before yourself, and what it takes to be a leader.

Who do you look up to and why?

My mother is the most important role model in my life as she has given me anything I could ever ask for: a roof over my head, food, and loving family. She has given everything to me. I find this extremely encouraging and a reminder while competing to give it my all.

What’s your gameday routine?

Spend time talking with friends and share a few laughs. While in the ready room I prefer to stretch, listen to pump up music, and mentally prepare to race.

What kind of music is on your iPod?

Dubstep, remixes, rap, and underground rap.

What’s your favorite book?

“The Lightning Thief” series.

What’s something about you that would surprise others?

I highly doubt there’s anything too surprising about me.

Are you involved in any activities or volunteering other than sports? If so, what?

I work at Monteaux’s Public House.

What’s your perfect day?

Hanging out with friends.
