Hometown heroes: men’s and women’s swimming

There was little doubt Torrey Bussey (Cary class of 2010) was going to have a standout women’s swimming career in college. The former Imp finished a fantastic career at LSU by qualifying for the NCAA championships and holding school records in the 200 breaststroke and 200 individual medley.

 

At Louisville, Victoria Mitchell (Cary 2011) became a key contributor for the Cardinals, who won their third straight conference title.

 

Henriette Stenkvist (Panther Creek 2011) had a tremendous season for Southern Cal, as she held several top times in the 500 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 200 backstroke, and competed in several relays for the Trojans.

 

Several area women’s swimmers are continuing their careers at N.C. State.

 

Hayley Tomlinson (Apex 2012) ranked high on the team in a number of events, including the 100 breaststroke (fifth), 200 breaststroke (fourth), 200 individual medley (fifth), and 400 individual medley (second).

 

Katelyn Linker (Cary Academy 2011) had her best times in the 200 fly (second) and 400 individual medley (fifth). Nicole Giamber (Middle Creek 2012) held top times in 100 breast (third), 200 breast (third), 400 individual medley (fourth), and 500 freestyle (fifth).

 

Kristin Connors (Panther Creek 2012) had a tremendous sophomore season, finishing second on her team in the 200, 500, 1,000 and 1,650 freestyle. Maddie Witzke (Holly Springs 2013) competes in the breaststroke for the Wolfpack, while fellow freshman Kendall Pena (Middle Creek 2013) posted top times in the 500 freestyle (third), 1000 freestyle (third), 1650 freestyle (third), and 200 fly (fifth).

 

At Liberty, Victoria Tschoke (Apex 2013) got her career off to a good start with top efforts in the 100 backstroke (55.95), 200 backstroke (2:00.49) and 200 individual medley (2:03.78).

 

Shannon Scovel (Green Hope 2013) will be looking to become a bigger impact for American in the coming years. The Eagles have her positioned to compete in the freestyle and individual medley events.

 

Men’s swimming

At North Carolina, Mitch DeForest (Apex 2012) had the fourth-best time on the team in the 500 freestyle (4:27.41), second-best in 1,000 freestyle (9:16.53) and fourth-best in 1650 freestyle (15:31.74). Teammate Dominick Glavich (Green Hope 2011), as a redshirt sophomore, was the team’s best in the 100 individual medley and second in the 100 breaststroke, 50 butterfly and 200 butterfly.

 

Cary native Ben Mayes (St. David’s 2013), who also competes for the Tar Heels, was fourth-best on the team in the 50 breaststroke.

 

In his first year at Pittsburgh, Anthony “Tony” Galante (Athens Drive 2013) was the team’s top diver, leading in two of three categories.

 

Bailey Maloney (Cardinal Gibbons 2013) competed in several events this past season at East Carolina, mostly in freestyle and breaststroke races.

 

Kai Wombacher (Cardinal Gibbons 2013) competed in the Ivy League championships for Brown and swam personal records in the 1000 and 1650 freestyles.

 

At Towson University, freshman Brandon Ress (Cary 2013) was second-best on his team in the 1000 freestyle and 1650 freestyle, while classmate Tim Schade (Panther Creek 2013) was third in the 50 backstroke and second in the 200 backstroke.

 

Adam Linker (Cary Academy 2013) was at his best in the 1650 freestyle for N.C. State, posting the school’s No. 2 time this year.
