Two years ago Scarborough’s Evan Karakolis, a graduate of Birchmount Park Collegiate’s exceptional athlete program, won the javelin competition at both the Canadian junior and Ontario high school championships.

Flash forward to this spring, having completed his second year of a scholarship to Rice University in Houston, Texas, and he’s climbing up the U.S. collegiate ranks, finishing seventh at their national championships on June 12 in Eugene Oregon with a throw of 68.91 metres.

“Evan was able to stay focused and succeed on a tough day that had great competition,” Rice men’s head coach Jon Warren said in a media release on the team’s website.

Karakolis had a banner sophomore season, winning his first career conference (Conference-USA) outdoor title and re-establishing his own school record with a lifetime best throw of 70.80m at the Virginia Challenge. He later placed third at the NCAA west preliminaries, after having finished 37th last year.
