An important moment in the history of human behavior has arrived: it is now possible to pay for the experience of living a nightmare. The Great Horror Campout, an overnight summer camp-style thriller experience, promises to combine elements of social awareness with options that include being “forcibly handled by a cast of actors.”
For those for whom real summer camp was something of a nightmare (unwelcome physical activity, searing social awkwardness, and shoddily prepared food,) this one-night experience may be a reprieve from adult life, what with its unwelcome physical activity, searing social awkwardness, and shoddily prepared food.
The people behind the Great Horror Campout are part of Ten Thirty One productions — you may have heard of their infamous Los Angeles Haunted Hayride.
The Bay Area is the first stop this scare camp will make, and will set up at the Alameda fairgrounds on July 11-12. In keeping with the ghoulishly childlike summer camp theme the 12-hour camping experience is “Choose Your Own Adventure”-style meaning that tent location will determine whether campers have a “lower octane horror experience” of roasted marshmallows and ghost stories or a “VERY EXTREME” night including at one point a literal bloodbath. (Great Horror Campout website does not specify whether or not real blood will be used.)
Tickets are a bit steep at $139/person for a four-person tent or $203/person for a two-person tent; the cost includes your tent spot, breakfast, parking, Hell Hunt Experience, and marshmallows, plus you’ll save money on your usual monthly expenditure of being forcibly handled by a cast of actors. And no matter where you pitch your tent, we’re sure you won’t be getting much sleep that night, sweet dreams.
