Treve well-fancied for Ascot debut

The Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner was second to Cirrus des Aigles on soft ground in the Prix Ganay at Longchamp under Frankie Dettori in April.

Treve will race for the first time outside France in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes (15:45 local time) on day two at the prestigious Royal Ascot meeting and the four-year-old will start as favourite.

Trainer Criquette Head-Maarek is bullish about Treve’s chances of pulling off another famous victory despite losing her perfect record last time out.

She said: “The ground will be no excuse and as long as she does not pull I am sure that she will run well.

“I think Treve has recovered well from her race in the Ganay, but we will know more on Wednesday. She looks well physically and has been working well so I think that she will be spot on for the race.”

Al Shaqab racing manager Harry Herbert echoed those sentiments about a horse that bolted up to land the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe by five lengths last season.

“She came out of her last race very well,” said Herbert.

“Criquette called me the next day and said Treve hadn’t left an oat, which was encouraging after a tough race on sticky ground against a great racehorse.

“It has all been really encouraging news since, the way she’s been training.”

Magician was also beaten on soft ground last time out as Noble Mission denied the Breeders Cup winner, but the Aidan O’Brien-trained colt is expected to provide the biggest threat to Treve.

The Fugue, owned by composer and songwriter Andrew Lloyd Webber, will attempt to strike the right note in the hands of William Buick and Ryan Moore rides Dank.

Richard Hughes, who landed a double on day one, will have high hopes that Sky Lantern can strike in the Duke of Cambridge Stakes (16.25) after getting up to win the Coronation Stakes at last year’s meeting.

The grey filly ended Hughes’ wait for a British Classic winner 12 months ago and will be expected to be in the mix to enter the winners’ enclosure once again.

Sky Lantern, trained by Richard Hannon, will have to fend off competition from the well-fancied Integral and Esoterique to triumph on Wednesday.

Spanish Pipedream and Anthem Alexander are among the main contenders in the Queen Mary Stakes (15.05).

There will be a further three races on the second day of the meeting.
