HMC Expands Work Zone
Makino’s a81nx horizontal machining center increases the size of the work zone from other NX series machines to accommodate large parts requiring diverse tool types and sizes. The X-, Y- and Z-axis travels measure 35.4″ × 35.4″ × 40.2″ (900 × 900 × 1,020 mm). The B-axis table is available in two configurations, as an index table with a large curvic coupling diameter or as an NC rotary table with a three-roller-type bearing. Both configurations are designed for optimal stability and thrust support. The HMC’s 10,000-rpm spindle offers 305 Nm of duty-rated torque and 45 kW of extended-duty power (26 kW of continuous output). An optional 8,000-rpm, high-torque spindle configuration is available for hard metal applications.
The rigid bed, column and table castings feature an increased step height between the front and rear X-axis linear guide for greater strength and improved acceleration. Roller-type linear motion guides provide increased stiffness under high load capacities. The machining center also features a GI servo control mode that can reduce pocketing times for aluminum billet applications, as well as a chain-type tool-change magazine with 80-tool capacity. The automatic toolchanger is designed to accommodate long, heavy tooling with large diameters, and features a touch-type HMI for managing tool data.
An L-shaped door eases accessibility to the spindle and provides visibility for tool inspection. The machine’s automatic pallet changer also features a safety guard door that can be adjusted to match the height of the operator’s work platform. A wider APC stocker improves loading of large fixtures and workpieces and simplifies chip cleaning. Preventive maintenance features are concentrated on the machine’s back panels.
