Canada had a great day of competition on the second day of play at the 2014 International Racquetball Federation World Championships in Burlington, Ont.

Sunday’s (June 15) game of the day was the match played by the Canadian men’s doubles team of Mike Green of Burlington and Vincent Gagnon of Montreal against Sebastian Franco and Alejandro Herrera of Columbia. The Canadians won their first game 15 – 8, but were behind the Columbian’s for the entire second game. Canada came back from a 14- 7 deficit to win the game 15 – 14 and avoided having to play a tie-breaker.

On Saturday, Green and Gagnon, who are the top two ranked Canadian male players, defeated Michael Barrett and Fernando Rivera of Puerto Rico, 15 – 1, 15 – 2.

Christine Richardson of Regina, Tim Landeryou of Saskatoon and Samuel Murray of Baie-Comeau all won their singles matches, however, Michèle Morissette of Baie-Comeau did not have the result she had hoped for, losing her match in two games on Sunday.

Frédérique Lambert of Montreal and Jennifer Saunders of Winnipeg also won their women’s doubles match Sunday.

Veronique Guillemette, a former Canadian national team member from Quebec who now lives in Argentina has had a good start to her tournament, winning both singles games so far in round robin play.

Round robin play concludes Monday, with the athletes being seeded into the main draw which begins on Tuesday.
