What Happens When You Suppress Your Stress?
Too many of us accept and embrace stress as a normal part of life without even questioning it. It’s fair enough for some to use stress as a work drive; after all, it doesn’t necessarily have to become a mental health problem. However, for those who habitually live a fast-paced, high-tension lifestyle, the repression of stress might lead to some strange behaviours. Such signs are always worth paying attention to – you may not think you’re suffering now, but your long-term wellness is always at risk where stress is concerned.
Surreal and disturbing dreams – nobody fully understands the logic of our subconscious. Sometimes stress in our waking life, when suppressed, expresses itself in the strangest ways during sleep. Basically, there is no escape! If you don’t find a way to mentally ‘detox’ yourself, your dreams will do it for you.
Tight muscles – stress causes a habit of muscle tension, which you may simply become used to living with. This kind of tension can sometimes lead to cramps or muscle spasms, as well as unhealthy physical development. Massage is always an excellent solution to ensure your wellbeing in the face of a demanding lifestyle.
Mouth pain – many of us carry our tension in our jaw. This often includes teeth-grinding during sleep, and translates to an unconscious clenching of the jaw during the day.
Hair – warnings about losing your hair through stress are more than just old wives’ tales! Stress puts you at risk of losing hair quicker, as well as advancing the greying process.
Stomach problems and acidity – there is an extremely high rate of hyperacidity among those working on the stock market and similarly demanding business professions. Doctors don’t yet entirely understand the connection between stress and gastro problems, but be sure – there is one.
Frequent colds and flu – stress is a force that constantly weakens the immune system. Therefore, giving your stress free rein will ultimately result in losing work time through a higher frequency of colds and flu. Try to prevent this eventuality by paying close attention to your work-life balance.
