Gospel news: ‘Chucks’ perform at benefit for cancer victim
I talked by phone with Shaye Smith of the Chuck Wagon Gang a few days ago, and she was excited to tell me of an upcoming benefit performance in Shelby next week. The “Chucks” will be participating in a free admission singing for a young woman named Michelle Whitecotton, married mother of an eight-year-old daughter, and who has ovarian cancer. All monies received through a freewill offering go to her family and toward soaring medical expenses.
This Christian effort will be taking place at 7 p.m. Feb. 22 in the new sanctuary of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, 1227 Mount Sinai Church Road, Shelby. Everyone is invited to come out for an evening of old-fashioned gospel singing and participate, as able, in this worthy endeavor. It promises to be a great evening of worship through song.
To learn more about the concert, call the church at 704-482-5871 or visit thechuckwagongang.net. In any case, go on out and enjoy the songs of one of America’s most popular groups.
GOSPEL MUSIC NEWS
* Jack Pittman, who sang baritone for the Palmetto State Quartet for more than 45 years, died in late December. He was 87.
* Mike Holcomb, former bass singer for the Inspirations, has joined the Song Garden Music Group’s roster of artists.
* This isn’t gospel news, but it will be a busy weekend for me. Valentine’s Day is the 14th, my wife Beverly’s birthday is the 15th, and my daughter-in-law Jane’s birthday is the 16th. Both of the ladies, I think, are looking forward more to Valentine’s Day than birthdays. Whichever, I don’t dare forget either of them. Don’t laugh, most of you guys know exactly what I mean — if you’ll admit it! Hope you all have/had a Happy Valentine’s Day.
