A cruel disease
Reading about Bahrain’s high level of cancer, reminded me of my dear wife Elizabeth who died eight months after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. There were no noticeable symptoms except for some reflux for which she took Gaviscon. But, unbeknown to us, the cancer was destroying her pancreas.
In the two months before diagnosis, my dear wife lost two stone in weight. She had been a healthy, cuddly 11st, but by the time of her death she’d gone down to less than 5st.
Pancreatic cancer crept up on us in the night and stole my lovely wife from me. I wish my wife had never had cancer; but I confess I’ve found myself asking why, with the huge variations in this wicked disease, my wife couldn’t have been visited by one that was easier to treat.
To all of us, cancer isn’t selective: It can strike any one of us. Next time you see a collection box for cancer research, please give generously.
