A Chicago-based charity with Munster ties has donated $100,000 to the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and Kimmel Cancer Center to fund research in pancreatic cancer prevention and detection.
The Leslie F. Schwartz Pancreatic Cancer Research Foundation, founded in memory of Schwartz, a longtime Munster resident, made the contribution.
The money will support a study titled “Identification of the Origins of Pancreatic Cancer Using Evolutionary Biology Techniques: Steps Toward Early Detection.”
The study, led by Dr. Christopher L. Wolfgang, seeks to identify the earliest precursors to pancreatic cancer.
Foundation President Mark Schwartz said the donation is the first major gift made by the foundation, which was founded to support pancreatic cancer research following the death of his wife.
