Over 200 to compete at 2014 Trampoline Gymnastics BC Championships
Abbotsford’s Exhibition Park will be the site of the 2014 Trampoline Gymnastics BC Championships, March 28-30.
A record number of 207 athletes are registered for the event hosted by Langley’s Flip City Gymnastics and Gymnastics BC.
The competitors, from 15 clubs from around the province, will be joined by another 200 athletes competing at the Flip City 2014 Invitational for artistic gymnastics.
“The Trampoline Gymnastics BC Championships are the largest provincial event held every year,” said Sandra Lewis, Gymnastics BC’s communications director. “In addition to competing for the title Gymnastics BC champion, many of the athletes are vying for spots on Team BC to the Western Canada Cup and Canadian Championships.”
Among the athletes scheduled to compete in the 2014 Trampoline Gymnastics BC Championships are national senior team members Tamara O’Brien (TAG Sports, Port Coquitlam) and Samantha Smith (Okanagan, Kelowna).
Also competing are national junior team members Cameron Quinlan and Kyle Carragher (Shasta, New Westminster); Danielle Gruber and Emma Tucker (DEKA, Kelowna); Douglas Armstrong (Flip City, Langley); and Trevor Stirling (Okanagan, Kelowna).
In addition to Armstrong, the host club, Flip City Gymnastics, is represented by 28 gymnasts including Adam Menzies. Menzies, the 2003 world DMT silver medalist, returned to competition this year after touring with Cirque du Soleil and other performing groups.
“Our coaches, athletes and volunteers are looking forward to hosting this great event,” said Rusty Pierce, Flip City’s Head Trampoline Coach. “We hope that all competitors are able to achieve their personal goals at this competition. Thank you to all the parents of all these athletes for their support of their children’s athletic endeavors.”
Competition gets underway on Friday, March 28 and runs through the weekend before wrapping up on Sunday, March 30.
The championships provide athletes of all ages and skill levels the opportunity to compete for the title of Gymnastics BC Champion in trampoline gymnastics. For some, this will be the pinnacle of their competitive career, for others it will be the first step towards representing B.C. and Canada. The event also serves as part of the trial process for Team BC to the 2014 Western Canada Cup and Canadian Gymnastics Championships later this year.
