Softball Birds win, baseball Birds fall after spring break

  • Stuttgart Softball 12, Des Arc 2

It was a different day, but the same result as the Stuttgart Lady Ricebird softball team pounded Des Arc for the second time in 11 days to improve to 5-1 on the season. Led once again by strong pitching from Jaelyn Maddox and excellent work from the Lady Bird lineup, the Birds won 12-2 in five innings.

In addition to improving her record to 5-1, Maddox had a great night at the plate by going 2 of 3 with a triple and three RBIs. Also taking part in the Lady Birds’ eight hit effort was Sidney Barron. Barron’s RBI double in the third inning was part of a huge eight-run third that ended any hope for the Lady Eagles.

Maddox looked a bit rusty out of the gate following a week long spring break layoff. The Lady Bird junior allowed one hit and walked three in a two run Des Arc first inning. Stuttgart’s lineup would answer in the bottom of the second to tie the score before exploding into the lead in the third. Maddox would go the rest of the way, scattering four hits over the final four innings.

Stuttgart will host the Barton Lady Bears Tuesday night at Gina Bailey Field as they look for their sixth win on the season. First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m.

Star City 12, Stuttgart Baseball 1

Following a one week hiatus because of spring break, the Stuttgart Ricebird baseball team took to the field Monday night against Star City. Unfortunately, the week long break was more harmful to the Birds as they dropped a 12-1 decision.

In spite of a strong night at the dish from Preston Earlywine, the Ricebirds never seriously threatened during the game. Starting pitcher Blake Marks lasted only  1 2/3 innings while allowing five earned runs. The big blow for Star City came in the first inning off the bat of sophomore Austin Capps who slammed a two-run home. In all, the Bulldogs battered Stuttgart pitching for eights hits in addition to drawing seven walks.

A bright spot for Stuttgart was the pitching of Derick Fletcher. The sophomore right hander did not give up a hit in 1 1/3 innings of work, while striking out one. Fletcher also showed exemplary command of the strike zone by throwing strikes on 12 of his 17 pitches. In addition to Earlywine’s 2-for-2 day, the rest of the Bird lineup only managed three additional hits.

Up next for Stuttgart is a return to Charlie Crawford field and a date with the Woodlawn Bears Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
