Kingston Hydro Wins Ontario Conservation Award

Utilities Kingston accepted the “Electricity Distributors Association’s Inaugural Conservation Leadership Excellence Award” this week on behalf of Kingston Hydro.

Sponsored by the Ontario Power Authority, the award was presented on Monday in recognition of Utilities Kingston and its customers’ leadership in Ontario for energy and water conservation.

“We are so proud to share this award with our customers who have taken action to conserve energy and water in their homes and businesses. It’s clear they truly understand the economic and environmental benefits of cutting down on their kilowatt hours and use of treated water,” said President and C.E. O. of Utilities Kingston, Jim Keech.

In a City media release, Keech also explained that conservation is ‘the cleanest and least costly way to increase electricity system capacity while offering customers a means to reduce their bills’.

Likewise credited with contributing to the success of Utilities Kingston’s conservation programs was its customer focus, innovative program delivery, and multi-utility structure.

The industry paid particular recognition to the service’s leadership for its ‘distributed generation connection policies’, “in-home-display” research, the new MyUtilities online customer portal, and achievements in cost-effective kilowatt and kilowatt hour savings.

“Kingston Hydro couldn’t have achieved this honour without the hard work of Utilities Kingston staff and contractors who deliver different aspects of our programs for homes and businesses in Kingston,” said Stephen Sottile, Conservation Officer for Utilities Kingston. “We’re grateful for the trust our customers have shown in our utility as we’ve worked together on finding and funding conservation investments, and look forward to doing even more to save energy and water in the years to come,”

Kingston Hydro has also recently introduces their redesigned website at KingstonHydro.com.

New improvements include: time-of-use period indicator to help you shift your electricity use to off-peak times; a map of Kingston Hydro’s distribution area; information on electricity rates, regulations, conservation and demand management; links to electricity services offered by Utilities Kingston (including energy conservation, billing and account management and maps of planned power outages); and photographs of electricity-in-use that were donated by local photographer Paul Wash.

Kingston Hydro is licensed by the Ontario Energy Board to distribute electricity to 27,000 customers in central Kingston. Owned by the City, Kingston Hydro in turn owns the wires, poles, transformers and meters that deliver electricity to customers through the provincial electricity transmission grid.

Kingston Hydro’s assets are maintained and operated by the employees of Utilities Kingston, which is also owned by the City. Kingston Hydro charges the OEB-approved rates for electricity and bills customers through Utilities Kingston.
