Utahns in baseball: Jeremy Guthrie wins in season debut, others off to good starts in minors

The first week of the baseball season is complete and several baseball players with Utah ties have already made major contributions to their respective teams.

In the major leagues, BYU alumnus Jeremy Guthrie picked up a win in his first start of the season, as Kansas City defeated Chicago 7-5 on Friday.

 

Matt Carson (BYU) and C.J. Cron (Utah) each have performed well early for the their respective Triple-A ball clubs to highlight Utah players in the minor leagues.

 

BYU alumnus Taylor Cole fanned seven batters in six innings for Single-A Dunedin, allowing just one run in six innings in a no-decision against Clearwater on Friday.

 

Former Ute Tyler Wagner also pitched well in his Single-A season debut. Wagner tossed five shutout innings to lead Brevard County to a 1-0 win over Daytona on Thursday.

 

MLB

 

John Buck (Taylorsville H.S.), Seattle: One hit in four at-bats in 8-3 win over Los Angeles Angels. Seattle is home to Los Angeles and Oakland this week.

 

Jeremy Guthrie (BYU), Kansas City: Five and 1/3 innings, four earned runs, four walks, three strikeouts in 7-5 win over Chicago White Sox on Friday. Next scheduled start: Wednesday vs. Tampa Bay.

 

Triple-A

 

Tyson Brummett (Spanish Fork H.S.), Albuquerque: No appearances yet.

 

Matt Carson (BYU), Columbus: Four hits and one run scored in three games for the Clippers.

 

C.J. Cron, Salt Lake (Utah): Five hits and five RBIs in four games for the Bees. Cron has three doubles already this season.

 

Stephen Fife (Utah), Albuquerque: Four innings, 10 hits, five earned runs in 11-1 loss to Tacoma Friday.

 

Brandon Lyon (Taylorsville H.S.), Salt Lake: One inning, three hits, no earned runs in one inning of work.

 

Double-A

 

Parker Morin (Utah), Northwest Arkansas: One hit and two RBIs in four at-bats for the Naturals.

 

Braeden Schlehuber (Viewmont H.S.), Mississippi: Zero hits in two games for the Braves.

 

Matt Spring (Dixie State), Portland: Had a two-run double in 4-3 loss to Reading on Sunday.

 

Keenyn Walker (Judge Memorial H.S.), Birmingham: Two hits, three stolen bases, four runs scored in three games for the Barons.

 

Single-A

 

Chris Capper (BYU), South Bend: No appearances yet.

 

Taylor Cole (BYU), Dunedin: Six innings, one hit, one earned run and seven strikeouts in no-decision against Clearwater Friday.

 

Jake Hannemann (BYU), Kane County: Four hits, one home run, two RBIs, four runs scored and three stolen bases in four games for the Cougars.

 

Adam Law (BYU), Rancho Cucamonga: Two hits in two games for the Quakes.

 

Marcus Littlewood (Pine View H.S.), Clinton: Five hits, two RBIs, two runs scored in three games for the LumberKings.
