Report: Once missing Texas A&M WR Thomas Johnson plans return to college football
When Texas A&M went into Tuscaloosa, Ala. and defeated the No. 1 Crimson Tide in 2012, it signaled a turning point for the Aggies under new head coach Kevin Sumlin and signal-caller Johnny Manziel.
As the A&M campus celebrated in the days following the victory, one of the team’s rising stars went missing and even when he was found later that week very few explanations were given.
That was the story of freshman receiver Thomas Johnson, one of the nation’s top recruits top recruits that year out of Dallas Skyline. While the law enforcement Texas Rangers looked for Johnson he eventually turned up near Skyline and the University announced he would not be returning.
Now nearly two year’s later, Brent Zwerneman of The San Antonio Express-News sought to find how Johnson was doing and what his future holds.
“(Johnson’s mother Lisa Hanks) added Johnson, who turns 20 on April 18, intends to play college football again, although not at A&M,” Zwerneman writes.
“He’s working out, he’s getting in shape, and he shall return,” Hanks vowed.
But Hanks’ optimism was not met with Johnson’s head coach at Skyline, Reginald Samples who said his “heart goes out” to Johnson and he hopes that Johnson can get back to college football.
“Hanks, who said Johnson lives at home with her, declined comment on why Johnson left A&M, and Johnson declined comment for this story through his mother,” Zwerneman writes.
“Thomas is just a very private person, but he’s always been a good kid,” Hanks said. “Respectful, accountable and bright.”
