Watch out for elevated water levels, says Conservation Halton

Conservation Halton is warning residents to stay away from watercourses and nearby structures such as bridges and dams as 20 mm of rain is expected to fall on the region tonight and into Tuesday morning.

The conservation authority issued the advisory Monday afternoon and said rainfall and mild temperatures last week had increased the flows and water levels in rivers and creeks.

The creeks are now at “near normal levels,” CH said, but advised people that “elevated water levels, fast flowing water, and slippery conditions along stream banks continue to make these locations extremely dangerous.”

There are also several areas in the upper reaches of the watershed which are still snow covered and will contribute to the runoff as a result of the forecasted rainfall.

“Blockages at bridges and culverts may produce localized flooding concerns due to remnant debris at bridges and culverts from the ice storm in December,” CH said. “Localized flooding in low-lying and flood prone areas may be expected.”

CH said it would continue to monitor the weather conditions and issue further messages as necessary.
