Star Wars Day countdown party at Horseshoe Inn, Shepton Mallet

STAR WARS fans – there is a countdown party at the Horseshoe Inn in Shepton Mallet to welcome in the Jedi equivalent of Christmas Day.

May the Fourth(May the Force be with you, get it?) is on Sunday and so landlord Ken Turner and his apprentice Chris Elliott are throwing a Star Wars party at the pub in Bowlish in the evening on May 3 ahead of Star Wars Day.

Fancy dress is optional, but one person who can’t wait to dress up is our photographer Jason Bryant, or DJ Boba Fett as he will become known on the night.

Then at ten seconds to midnight, there will be a countdown to May 4 to welcome in the New Hope.

A Stormtrooper arrests Ken Turner of the Horseshoe Inn for selling cider.

The genesis of May the Fourth celebrations began not with the Dark Side of the Force but the Iron Lady – Margaret Thatcher (though critics of her may not see the difference).

The Tory Party congratulated Baroness Thatcher on her appointment to Number 10 by putting an advert in The London Evening News in 1979, saying “May the Fourth Be with You, Maggie. Congratulations.”

In 2012 Boris Johnson would mimic the stunt by signing off his mayoral acceptance speech for a second term in charge of London by saying “and May the Fourth be with you.”

And in faintly related news, there was a disturbance in the Force, or at least Shepton Mallet, when Darth Vader and his Stormtroopers marched ahead of the real military in the parade at Collett Park Festival Day last June.
