Big South 2A/3A Conference track and field championship preview

Stuart Cramer hosts the one-day Big South 2A/3A Conference track meet Tuesday.

Ashbrook’s boys will be seeking their third straight title while a new girls champion will be crowned because 2012 and 2013 winner Kings Mountain is no longer a Big South member.

The field events are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m., followed by the running events at 3, weather permitting. Should the meet get rained out, it would likely be rescheduled for Thursday. Stuart Cramer is scheduled to host a soccer game on Wednesday.

Two of last year’s award winners return. Defending male most outstanding athlete Xzavier Robinson of Ashbrook is seeded first in the high jump, third in the 800 meters and sixth in the 400. Robinson also runs for Ashbrook’s top-seeded 4×400-meter relay team. Robinson last year as a sophomore won the high jump, ran legs for the first-place 4×800-meter and 4×400-meter relay teams and placed third in the 800 meters.

Annelle Grealis, a South Point freshman last year and now a Stuart Cramer sophomore, is the meet’s defending field and overall most outstanding athlete. Grealis is seeded second in the high jump, third in the 100-meter hurdles and fifth in the long jump. Last year, Grealis placed first in the high jump, third in the 300-meter hurdles and fifth in the long jump.

Ashbrook’s boys have won eight titles in the league’s 12-year history, including six of the last eight. North Gaston and Ashbrook share the girls lead with four Big South titles each.
