Easter Shopping Drops in Abuja, Increases in Lagos

Following Monday’s suicide bombing at a popular motor pack in Abuja, shopping activities for Easter have suddenly dropped in the capital city, THISDAY findings have revealed.

Reports from the city and other prone areas in the north indicated that residents are being careful at  patronising popular markets and malls to avoid being victims of bomb blasts.

According to the report, activities at Yanyan, Wuse, Karimo and various shopping malls  markets have slowed down as many consumers now prefer to shop at their neighbourhoods, instead of going to the prominent markets in town.

In contrary, business activities in Lagos and other part in the South are on the increase in the last few days as residents make efforts to do last minute shopping in preparation for Easter Carnival.

THISDAY visit to Marina, Broad Street, Apongbon, CMS and Mushin areas of Lagos showed that many residents are out for Easter shopping as well as buying school materials ahead of resumption after the ceremony.

A staff of one of a multinational company, Ekom Simon, who spoke to our correspondent at Ikeja Shopping Mall, said he was impressed by the turnout at the mall. He described the mall as being strategic to the needs of residents who live in the mainland.

“Easter period is symbolical because of what it means to the Christian world but beyond that, it also gives parents the opportunity to shop for school materials and what the family would need for the celebration,”

Meanwhile, an expert in the new media industry, Mr. Ello Umeh has advised people living in the north to resort to online shopping to avoid unnecessary blast in the market.

Umeh, who is the Managing Director of Terragon Group Limited, a fast growing new media business, said online shopping, is a modern way to go when one finds this difficult to visit the physical markets.

“At a time like this, northerners should resort to online shopping, it brings convenience and varieties. Again, the vast majority of online stores offer prices that are much lower than what you will find at a physical store. There are a few reasons for this. The first is because many people use the Internet to find cheaper items. Online business owners understand this. They will usually reduce their profit margin to get more customers,” he said.
