Ensure Necessary Nap Time for 3 Year Olds

Getting your toddler to nap not only improves his or her development and energy levels, but entire family wellness too, as nothing can be more exhausting or frustrating than a toddler who won’t stay in bed. Your wellbeing can suffer as a result of this, but don’t fear because help is at hand to make sure your 3 year old naps their way to better wellness.

Firstly, set a regular, soothing routine to let your toddler know that it’s nap time. Choose calm activities such as reading or playing quietly with toys in the hour beforehand, as opposed to rambunctious activities that will excite your child. Then, right before the nap, incorporate a routine of soothing activities like cuddles and lullabies. Make sure this happens in the same way, at the same time every day if possible, to help him or her form a habit.

When your child fights against nap time, you can want to flag and give in, but instead of skipping it altogether, compromise that your toddler must have quiet time in her room even if he or she doesn’t sleep. Set the rule that they must stay in bed, and leave some books and soft toys nearby so your toddler doesn’t get up. You might find they fall asleep within minutes as they don’t feel forced into it.

Also, remember that environmental factors such as temperature, light and noise can make it difficult for a young child to fall asleep. At nap time, lie in your child’s bed and look around for potential problems. You might need to hang darker curtains, adjust the temperature, or have white noise in the room to block out noises that keep your toddler awake. Ask your toddler if anything annoys them during nap time.

Finally, if the routine isn’t working, don’t be afraid to change it up. A change in nap time can make it more appealing and new, so make an alternative nap spot with a sleeping bag or floor pillows in the corner of your toddler’s room to make a nice change from the bed. For a special treat, your toddler could sleep in your bed or on the sofa near you if he or she can fall asleep with noise and activity around her. You might even want to take a nap with your toddler, and that way you can both benefit from some rest.
