Have You Been Conned By These Mainstream Nutrition Lies?

Your diet is one of the most important factors to your wellness, but have you been avoiding or opting for certain foods that you shouldn’t have been? There are certain universal beliefs in diet and nutrition that are simply untrue, and could be doing more harm than good to your wellbeing.

Firstly, it’s commonly believed that eggs are unhealthy because they contain a large amount of cholesterol, which increases your risk of heart disease. However, it has recently been proven that cholesterol in your diet doesn’t really raise the cholesterol in blood, and eggs actually raise your ‘good’ cholesterol and are not associated with increased risk of heart disease. In fact, eggs are high in all sorts of nutrients along with unique antioxidants that protect your eyes, and are a good breakfast food for weight loss.

The second lie is that saturated fat is bad for you rose out of an epidemic of heart disease a few decades ago that was said to be caused by eating too much fat, in particular saturated fat. However, this was based on highly flawed studies and political decisions and has been utterly disproved. A massive review article which looked at 21 prospective epidemiological studies with a total of 347,747 subjects found absolutely no association between saturated fat and heart disease, and saturated fat from natural sources, such as meat, cheese, coconut oil and butter, helps to raise ‘good’ HDL cholesterol.

Finally, there has been a recent surge in the popularity of grains, even though the agricultural revolution happened fairly recently in human evolutionary history and your genes haven’t changed that much. Compared to other real foods, like vegetables, grains are fairly low in nutrients and are also rich in a substance called phytic acid which binds essential minerals in the intestine and prevents them from being absorbed.

Wheat, the most common grain in the western diet, can cause a host of health problems, both minor and serious. The protein it contains, gluten, can damage the intestinal lining, cause pain, bloating, stool inconsistency and tiredness, and has been associated with serious brain disorders such as schizophrenia and cerebellar ataxia. So don’t believe the lie and go for grains, but instead have a hearty breakfast of eggs and meat. Now there’s a nutritional truth you can get behind!
