Warning: Could You be Harbouring a Silent Disease?
One day you’re walking around, feeling healthy, happy and bursting with wellness, and the next day you suffer from a fall and realise that your body has been harbouring a horrible, debilitating disease all this time. So, what is this disease that can be a threat to your wellbeing without you even knowing it? Osteoporosis.
A new study has revealed that more people than was ever previously thought are suffering from low bone density, and are therefore at a much greater risk of breaking a bone.
As we get older, we are all at a greater risk of breaking bones anyway, as bones tend to get thinner with age, but for those who suffer from osteoporosis, this becomes an even more serious concern and often from a much younger age.
The study has predicted that if the prevalence of bone mass and density problems remains the same, by the year 2020 58.2 million people will be suffering from low bone mass, and this will rise to 64.3 million by 2030.
The good news is that there are some simple lifestyle changes that you can make in order to help protect you from falling victim to osteoporosis. These revolve around diet and exercise as well as being aware of your joints and bones.
Early detection could also be key – by the time you have broken a bone it is probably too late. You should aim to prevent osteoporosis by the time you have hit 30, as this is the point at which we are likely to start to lose bone mass. This can be done by keeping your vitamin D levels up, doing exercises such as weights, the plank and push ups, doing plenty of cardio exercise such as running and walking, all on a regular basis.
