Having Trouble Sleeping? 5 Remedies to Help You Sleep at Night

Our health and happiness depend greatly on the quality of sleep we get every night. It’s no surprise that our lifestyle has an incredible impact on our sleep. The following five remedies can help to end those awful nights of tossing and turning.

1. Exercise

Body temperature naturally changes throughout the day, reaching the highest point in the evening and the lowest point just before waking up. Aerobic exercise of at least 20 minutes can help to contribute to sound sleep that’s associated with the subsequent decrease in temperature after exercise.

2. Avoid Caffeine and Alcohol

It’s important to make sure you’re not consuming chemicals late in the afternoon that can alter the brains natural sleep patterns such as caffeine or alcohol. A nightcap might help you to relax before bed but it can actually disrupt the brain’s ability to enter REM sleep mode, leading to less sound sleep.

3. No Bright Screens Before Bed

The blue and white light associated with natural daylight (as well as electronic devices) signals the body to suppress melatonin production. As such, one should discontinue use of any devices that emit blue and/or white light prior to bedtime in order to increase melatonin production. If you need something to help you fall asleep, consider a book or listening to the radio.

4. Maintain a Consistent Sleep Schedule

You may work odd or long hours but your body can adapt. What’s most important is that the sleep schedule you choose is consistent. The body will quickly learn to associate the time and repetition with sleep. It’s also important not to break your sleeping habits during the weekend. If you need to change your sleep schedule, try to do it in increments of 15 to 30 minutes.

5. Consider What You’re Sleeping On

Humans spend about a third of their lives sleeping. It should go without a shock that the mattress we choose is as much of an important decision as buying a home or a car. Take your time in doing research when shopping for a new mattress and be sure to spend money on a quality mattress that will provide support and comfort each night. There’s a perfect mattress for everyone. If you are having trouble sleeping at night, consider getting a new mattress from Crowley Furniture or your local furniture store. A new mattress might bring you better comfort at night making it easier to fall asleep.

It’s important to understand that sleep is an important ritual which can have dramatic health impacts, both positive and negative. Adjust your lifestyle to suit your sleep needs and make sure to get a good night’s rest.
