The river is warming up a good bit, easing in the 60s. Lack of water clarity is the bigger issue. NBC Ch. 4 meteorologist “Weather Kim” Martucci says, “Rainy week with overnight lows in the upper 40s and daytime highs 60-75 until Friday with some clearing. Monday and Tuesday will be close to 60 with Wednesday and Thursday into the 70s.”
With cloud cover, chatterbaits, spinnerbaits and crankbaits will be the key baits this week. Fish around grass and wood cover. Vary speeds according to light penetration and water clarity. In stained water under cloudy skies, stick with darker colors for chatterbaits, black/blue or green pumpkin skirts with matching trailers. These can be fished at every tide level on 14-pound test Gamma Edge Fluorocarbon.
Spinnerbaits with gold blades and white skirts…at lower tides, use a ¼-ounce Colorado/Indiana blades. Higher tides, increase to 3/8 ounce. Keep in contact with grass or wood. Look for stained or off-color water, choppy water or cloudy skies. With clear water, try burning a double willow spinnerbait with a chartreuse skirt. Same line here.
Snap fire tiger Mann’s Baby 1-Minus crankbaits out of grass or close to wood. Try Lucky Craft LVR D-7 lipless crankbaits in red patterns on cloudy days or with some sun use Shad or chartreuse patterns. Make contact with grass, rip out and hesitate before retrieving. Edge Fluorocarbon 14-16 pound test, depending on grass thickness.
