The Springfield Invitational was the major meet for area track teams over the weekend. .

Area Class 1A and 2A teams got to compete against the likes of 3A Lamar at Aaron Hale Field on Saturday, April 26.

The Lamar Lady Savages are currently one of the top 3A teams in the state and have a real shot at winning this year’s state track meet.

Lamar scored 128.5 points to win the team girl’s team title. Springfield was second with 110 points, and Wiley was third with 61 points.

“I think we were a little intimidated at first to run against Lamar’s best, but we held our own,” said Springfield girls coach Mike Jaco. “We bettered some times before the wind started to blow, which was nice. There were several nice performances from lots of girls out there on Saturday.”

The top story was in the field events where Lamar showed its dominance in the throwing events.

The Lady Savages scored 48 points alone in the discus and shot put.

Lamar posted a one-two-three sweep in the discus and took first and second in the shot put as well.

Lamar senior Summer Eberhardt won the discus with a throw of 124-3 while Allison Sena was second (112-00), and Courtney Clark was third (111-07).

Clark won the shot put with a throw of 40-8.50 and Sena was second (38-07).

Both Eberhart and Clark are the state’s 3A top ranked throwers in the discus (135-06) and shot put (41-10) respectively.

Area track fans got to see Lamar’s Ashley Snyder, one of the top 3A sprinters in the state, win the 100 dash in 12.58, blistering the field.

The Lamar junior did not run the 200 or 400 this week.

Lamar also posted wins from Savannah Tice in the 800 run and the 800 medley relay team of Taylor Wertz, Winter Yant, Chelsea Vallejos, and Ashley Snyder. Their winning of 1:53.29 was nearly five seconds better than that of second place Springfield (1:58.51).

It was an all freshmen finish in the 400 dash with Wiley’s Peighton Lindo (1:05.91) beating Bree-ann Carwin (1:06.22) from South Baca and Springfield’s Tatelyn Lasley (1:06.42).

Another Wiley freshman Cassidy Miller opened some eyes with her win in the 300 hurdles as she beat senior Kelsey England from Crowley County and Springfield junior Kallysa McGeary by nearly a second.

The race of the day was in the 100 hurdles where McGeary and Lamar senior Taylor Wertz finished in a dead heat at 16.94 seconds, a personal best for both hurdlers.

McGeary was awarded the win in a photo finish.

There was plenty of drama in the relays as well.

Swink edged a good Lamar team in the 400 relay by .03 of a second in another photo finish.

Springfield showed their strength in the relays as they won the 800, 1,600, and 3,200 relays, while placing second in the 800 medley and third in the 400 relay.

Breanna Hendricks also paced the Lady Longhorns with a first place in the 200 dash.

In the jumping events, Wiley freshman Audrey Poteet opened eyes as well, beating the state’s top 1A high jumper senior Morgan Howard of Cheyenne Wells.

Poteet jumped a career best 5-2 in winning the event with Howard going 410.

In another outstanding performance, Granada senior Kirby Vanderpool moved herself to the top of the Class 1A leader board with her winning jump of 34-6 in the triple jump.
