Tottenville sweeps McKee/SI Tech in girls’ fencing
Tottenville’s consistency was on display Tuesday at home in a sweep of rival McKee/S.I. Tech in girls’ fencing.
The Pirates rolled to a 45-19 victory in foil as Francesca Santacroce recoded 16 touches, Maryia Spirydonava had 15 and Gabriella Davilla posted 14. The balance was even more amazing in Tottenville’s 45-35 triumph in epee where all three fencers — Jenna Gyimesi, Michelle Gillen and Nicole Goubin — produced 15 touches each.
It was the second sweep of the Sea Gulls, as the Pirates improve to 3-1 overall (4-0 in foil, 3-1 in epee) with two matches left in the regular season.
“This will be my lineup for the rest of the season,” Tot coach Charlie Senger said. “All three girls in both weapons are working well together. They’ve really jelled in the four matches.
“Gabby Davila has been fencing well, and as a four-year senior fencer, I’ll be looking to her to lead the team the rest of the way and into the playoffs (which are May 18).”
The silver lining for MSIT was that it drew a little bit closer in epee than in the first meeting between the squads on April 2.
“Tottenville’s a very good team. But we battled and competed,” said Gulls coach Kevin Heiden, who praised the effort of his team, especially Lily Lamberg (foil) and Victoria Wuensch (epee). “In the next 10 days we have three more matches. It’s going to be like a fire drill, so we have to figure out the order.”
Lily Lamberg (MSIT) 5-4 over Gabriella Davila (T); Francesca Santacroce (T) 6-1 over Alexandra Marto (MSIT); Maryia Spirydonava (T) 5-0 over Sze Wah Lee (MSIT); Santacroce 5-3 over Lamberg; Davila 5-2 over Carmen Aseervatham (MSIT); Spirydonava 5-2 over Marto; Santacroce 5-1 over Rokan Kadro (MSIT); Spirydonava 5-3 over Lamberg; Davila 5-2 over Marto.
Epee: Tottenville 45, MSIT 35
