Coastal Alabama track and field rankings: Alma Bryant’s Dolvin jumps into javelin top five

MOBILE, Alabama — The Coastal Alabama performance list endured some changes after last weekend’s sectional competition.

Some of the leaders improved on their marks, but there were some who were leapfrogged as a result of seasonal bests by other athletes. To make matters even more interesting, there were some who were nowhere near the performance listings who made a statement at the sectionals and wound up either at or near the top of the lists.

Take Alma Bryant’s Michael Dolvin, who scored an upset win in the Class 6A boys’ javelin. His previous best throw was in the 141-foot range, but with a change in technique, he threw a personal best of 169-2 and jumped into the top five.

Murphy’s Jamira Boykins took over the top spots in the girls’ 100 and 200-meter dashes after stellar performances at the Class 6A sectionals. In the Class 3A sectionals held in Tuscaloosa, T. R. Miller’s Karisa Nelson had an outstanding performance, taking over the No. 1 spot in the 800 and 3200-meter runs.

The boys’ high jump had one of the most radical changes — Mobile Christian’s Devon Curry — Coastal Alabama’s current leader — improved three inches to 6-5 at the Class 2A sectionals in Montgomery last weekend, while Baker’s Melvin Hill improved four inches at the Class 6A sectionals to move into second place (6-4).

LeFlore’s Roderica White and Spanish Fort’s Cheynne Moody jumped into the No. 4 and No. 5 spots in the girls’ triple jump after a great battle in the Class 5A sectionals. Blount and Mobile Christian blazed to identical times of 43.10 in their respective classifications in the boys’ 4 X 100-meter relay last weekend to share the lead locally, while Baker’s girls’ 4 X 100 crew eased ahead of Blount for the top spot.

With the state championships coming up this weekend, it will be no surprise if there are any more movements in the rankings. This is the time of season where athletes should be peaking and the sectionals proved that to be the case in a big way.

Here are the top performances as of April 30:
