Four Kayakers Ride the Rivanna
Feeling adventurous? Maybe not as much as these four people. Kayaking is popular on the Rivanna, but today was probably not the best day to test the waters.
Every river you see around Central Virginia is way above normal levels. It is strongly advised that you stay away from these waters. You’ll commonly see floating logs, rocks and other debris. What we find underneath the murky water is a whole different issue. These courageous four learned this the hard way.
“We figured the water was going to be fast, but we figured it would be high, and the area was wide so we figured it wouldnt be a problem,” stated Bruce Bannan, one of the four kayakers.
With water this high you never know what is below, and this can create undertows and currents that can get you off balance and throw you out of your kayak.
“One went over, and then I went to give her a hand, and that pulled the other one over, and we all got to swim down the river.”
This chain reaction led all four down the river. Luckily they washed up on the bank, were able to call 911 and get some help from Albemarle fire and rescue.
“They located us, dragged the kayaks up the hill, and we’ll take it back by ground route from here”
This was a good lesson for all of them, and hopefully the last time they dare to play with Mother Nature.
