Eagles fifth-sixth holds own at multi-team home meet

 
Waurika’s fifth and sixth grade competitors held their own, when the youngest Eagles and Lady Eagles hosted the Waurika Elementary Invitational at Eagles track complex.

 

There were five teams represented in the fifth grade boys meet, where the Eagles were joined by Fox, Elgin, Rush Springs and Friend Elementary.

 

The Eagles were strong in the throwing events, dominating both the discus and shot put.

 

In the discus, Julio Nulty claimed the gold medal with a throw of 66-7, while teammate Isaac Gholson was second at 59 feet, Slade Cathey third at 56-10 and Jacob Richardson sixth at 50-9.

 

Gholson was second in the shot put, with a toss of 25-3.5, with Nulty fourth (25 feet) and Cathey sixth (23-6).

 

Kevin Garcia was fourth in the 200 meter sprint in 31.06, while Gustavo Gomez was sixth (31.84). Garcia was also second in the 400 in 1:17.25, second in the 800 (2:50) and fourth in the 1600 (7:22.58).

 

Dylan Brown was sixth in the 100 dash (15.01) and took third in the 400 (1:17.31), while Gustavo Gomez was fourth in the 1600 (7:11.04) and sixth in the 200 (31.84).

 

In the fifth grade girls division, the Lady Eagles placed in 10 events, in a field that included Alex, Elgin, Grandview, Friend, Rush Springs and Fox.

 

Cassidy Rodriguez captured a gold medal in the long jump at 11 feet, while WES had two placer in the shot put, where Landry Forsyth was fourth (19 feet) and Porsha Jarvis fifth (18-8.5). Forsyth was also runner-up in the discus at 45-11.

 

Asia Smith was fourth in the 100 (15.23) and Breann McDonald third in the 200 (32.83), while Haley Contreras was sixth in the 400 (1:23.89).

 

Lexie Streeter copped two medals, finishing second in the 1600 in 7:39.12 and taking fifth in the 800 (3;21.75).

 

Waurika’s 800 relay team was third in 2:23.50 and the Lady Eagles were also third in the 400 relay in 1:06.56.

 

In the sixth grade boys meet, the Eagles ran into strong competition against Alex, Fox, Elgin, Friend, Grandfield, Rush Springs, Walters and Grandview, but the emerged with three gold medals.

 

Brayden Contreras won the open 800 in 2:39.70 and also was part of two winning relays, the 1600 that clocked in 4:57.65 and the 3200 that finished in 11:43.51. Contreras was also runner-up in the 200 in 27.88.

 

Turner Mora was second in the long jump at 15-7 and fourth in the 400 (1:10.88). Walker Rawlings was third in the discus, with a fling of 71-2.

 

Grandview, Elgin, Alex, Walters, Fox, Grandfield and Rush Springs provided the competition in the sixth grade girls division, where Sara Ballard and Allison Dyer produced all of Waurika’s points.

 

Ballard was third in the long jump, with a leap of 12-9, and took sixth in the 400 in 1:22.61.

 

Dyer chucked the shot put 26-5 to finish fourth.
