New local team to compete in Northern California Junior Lacrosse meet
The Alameda Attack high school women’s lacrosse team has qualified for the Northern California Junior Lacrosse Association (NCJLA) championship tournament in its inaugural season.
The tournament will pit the top four teams from the NCJLA west and east divisions against each other. The Alameda Attack team is currently ranked third in the west division. Other teams in the west division include the Morgan Hill Clovers, the San Jose Extreme, Napa Force, the Oakland Tech Bulldogs, Petaluma Synergy, Petaluma Fusion and the Rancho Cotati. The tournament will start this Saturday, May 10, at Redwood Middle School, 3600 Oxford St. in Napa.
The Alameda Attack high school women’s team is a partnership between the Alameda Attack Lacrosse Club and St. Joseph Notre Dame (SJND) High School. This partnership allows girls from any high school to play on the team. There are 17 girls on the team from seven different high schools, many of them Alameda high schools. Adriana Morales, Brooke Tyler, Mary Carmen Reid, Rachel Hungerford and Rebecca Rochlin attend SJND; Alexis Jimenez, Melika Sebihi and Migelle Miranda attend Encinal High School; Calia Devlin, Danielle Simpson and Phoebe Brand go to Alameda High School; Cecilia Garofoli, Maile Morrish and Teagan Waterloo attend Julia Morgan Middle School in Oakland; Inna Broadbent goes to Moraga Academy; Savannah Hallgarth attends Nea Learning Academy; and Skylar Herrera- Ross goes to Alameda Community Learning Center.
The team was created by Alameda Attack Lacrosse Club’s desire to expand the lacrosse experience for girls through high school and the desire of SJND to allow its student-athletes to have the ability to compete in the growing sport.
The season started on March 1. The team has gone 11-5 overall and 9-3 in league play heading into the playoffs. Hannah Scott, who was a stand-out player at Alfred University in New York and then coached high school and college lacrosse teams in England, coaches the team.
